History of Basketball
Basketball a sport watched and played by millions world-wide originated in the town of Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891.
Its Inventor Dr. John Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport that was suitable for play inside during the Massachusetts winter for the students at the School for Christian Workers. He wanted to create a game that was based on skill for the students instead of one that relied on strength alone. He needed a game to be played indoors in a relatively small space. The end result was the game called basketball. The first game was played using a soccer ball and 2 peach baskets.
The Sport was introduced in the United States and other Nations by the Ymca movement as early as 1893. Basketball was introduced to the Olympics in 1936.
Naismith devised a set of 13 rules when the game was created and since then there have been changes and additions to the rules. Some of the rules that got changed is being allowed to dribble the ball because before they could only pass. Also there was the foul shot line if you got fouled and 3 pointer if you were behind a certain line. They also added the shot clock and made the goals with glass backboards and metal rims with nets instead of peach baskets.
